An accessible farm, a short shopping list and time to ask questions are all you need for a good start.
For your first visit, choose a farm whose current offer suits your family. A farm shop is not automatically an open-access visitor attraction. Check in advance whether there are visitor areas and whether registration or a ticket is required.
Check current times on the farm’s website. Allow a little flexibility for travel, breaks and any shopping. A water bottle, weather-appropriate clothing and a basket make a good start. A cool bag can be useful for purchases that need refrigeration.
Follow signs, barriers and the farm’s instructions. Do not enter barns or work areas without permission. Only feed animals when expressly allowed to do so. Machinery and working routes are not play areas.
Let the children ask a question: What is growing here right now? Which product has the shortest journey to the shop? A little conversation can be more memorable than a packed programme.
